New Fallout Game Finally Surfaces With The Worst Possible Twist
Officially, Bethesda is yet to announce a new Fallout game.
It’s widely assumed that Fallout 5 is being developed, particularly as Todd Howard has teased as much, but there’s nothing in the way of a formal reveal.
What I can tell you is at least one more Fallout game was recently in the works at Xbox, but the twist is that it has sadly already been scrapped.
The Cancelled Fallout Game Wasn’t In Development At Bethesda
As spotted by ComicBook, this is according to media veteran Jeff Gerstmann who recently made the reveal during an episode of The Jeff Gerstmann Show podcast.
Malcolm in the Middle reboot trailer
“Todd Howard and the Todd Howard team probably has a pretty firm grasp on what they want to do with those specific franchises,” he began.
“And instead of assigning that stuff to another team, it would be more likely for them to staff up at BGS [Bethesda Game Studios] to make sure they have what they need to get those games done.
“There was a Fallout thing in development at another Microsoft-owned studio that I think is no longer going to see the light of day.
“They [Bethesda] will probably not do the remakes. I think those have been outsourced to others, like the Fallout 3 thing I think has been outsourced to another studio.
“But, you know, new games I think will probably come from that brain trust [Bethesda].”
Taking all of Gerstmann’s comments into consideration, it seems as if the unannounced Fallout game was indeed some kind of mainline entry or spin-off.
He makes a great effort to emphasise that he doesn’t believe Bethesda is interested in managing the creation of remasters or remakes.
It does, however, sound as if it wouldn’t want another studio creating a mainline entry.
As for who that other Microsoft-owned studio is, it’s easy to speculate that it might be Obsidian, but there’s no real evidence to go off.
Of course, we do have to take all of this with a pinch of salt. Gerstmann doesn’t have a bad track record but it’s safer to air on the side of caution.
It’s a difficult blow to hear, especially as a new Fallout game hasn’t landed since the launch of Fallout 76 in 2018 – and even that MMORPG didn’t exactly appeal to all fans of the base games.

Bethesda
It’s not as if Bethesda is exactly distracting us with teases of the one project we do know it has in the works, The Elder Scrolls VI.
That hasn’t surfaced since its initial reveal all the way back at E3 in 2018.
The Elder Scrolls VI is playable internally, so there is some hope that we could see it arrive in the next two or three years.
I do fear we’ll be waiting a lifetime though for the next mainline Fallout game.
